Abstract Despite the important role amphibians play in ecosystems, they are disappearing globally. Thus, in order to protect their populations, it is essential to know the factors affecting their presence in a given location. The Baixo Vouga Lagunar is a very heterogeneous area, with seasonal or permanent floodable habitats which gather ideal conditions for the establishment of different animal species, particularly amphibians. This study aims to detect abundance, diversity and distribution patterns of amphibians in the mosaic of habitats that constitutes the Baixo Vouga Lagunar, as well as to identify the factors that affect them. To achieve this, several standardized methods were applied, trying to detect amphibians with different lifestyles, and in different stages of development. The study was carried out during a year. In the systematic sampling 12 species of amphibians were found in this area, which corresponds to about 70% of existing amphibians species in Portugal. The food availability (measured by insect availability) was revealed to be particularly valuable in the amphibian community composition, being selected in the redundancy analyses, performed with both the amphibian abundance and incidence data. The results obtained with the generalized linear mixed models revealed that the models which best explain the amphibian richness in the Baixo Vouga Lagunar region include variables related to human presence, as well as with water and food availability. The distance to the nearest well revealed to be the variable which best explain amphibian richness, showing that, in this area, amphibian were able to adapt and even obtain benefice from human presence, mostly in farmed land and in habitats typically associated to brackish water, as marshes and reeds. However, natural habitats are crucial for Baixo Vouga Lagunar amphibians, with emphasis to temporary water mass, which value to amphibians is reinforced in this study, and that should be target of conservation actions.
